Welcome to the newb IRC walkthrough. This should provide you with all the steps necessary to basically use IRC efficiently so you can be available and connected to the best way of contact to the rest of the gaming community.

We will start assuming you have downloaded and installed mIRC correctly. Download it Here

Before we even open mIRC, lets set up an account through the gamesurge website. Go to http://www.gamesurge.net/createaccount/ and follow the instructions on the site.

Enter your Account name (this will be your login name).

Enter your Email Address (this will need to be a working email address).

Input the word shown in the picture.

You should now get a message saying something like this:

Check your Email and you should have an email containing something of the following sort:

Now that you have an Account, lets open up mIRC but make sure you keep your Email open.

Once mIRC opens, you will get a screen like this:
**Note mIRC says you only have a trial version -- ignore it by clicking continue on the two screens**

You will then see a screen like this:

Enter your name (note this will be made public). Also enter your email address you registered with. Also enter the Handle (screen name) you want to go by as well as 1 alternate in case the one you choose is taken.

Next, Click on the + symbol next to Connect to bring down a list of options. Click on the Servers option and a little window like this will be shown:

Find and select GameSurge from the list of folders, open it and select GameSurge: Random Server:

Next, click on Options in the left side menu and click on the button 'Perform'. A window will pop up like this:

In this window, you want to put the information given in your confirmation email from GameSurge. Lets recall the email:

In the Perform box, put your command /authserv auth username password. Next put this command in the Perform box: /join #WU
Finally click the checkbox that says Enable perform on connect.

In the future, you can put more channels in this Perform box and connect to them automatically as well. I only included two basic channels for the simple tutorial.

Finally, Click OK on the perform window. Then Click on the Connect option on the left side menu and click the button 'Connect to Server'.

After a few beeps and windows, you should be Connected to IRC, logged into the IRC network and in the performed channels you wanted to join.

Here are some basic commands you will need when using mIRC:
/join #channelname - this will allow you to join any channel that you want (all channels need the # symbol in front of the name)
/nick nickname - this will change your displayed screen name when in mIRC
double clicking on someone's nickname - This will bring up a private message window which only you and other person can read
/part - this will close the particular channel you are on (can also be done by clicking the x on the window
/quit - this will exit mIRC
